The year is 2016 and the middle of summer, either my teacher or a classmate sent this link to submit my art for a contest. There was nothing to lose, so I submitted 2-3 artworks. Months would eventually pass and I started my freshman year of art school, and after awhile I was so sure that I had lost that contest…but then October rolled around and I got that email.
I felt a whirlwind of emotions getting that email that my drawing had been accepted. My artwork was going to hang in the Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall airport!
After signing many documents, I then had to bring the artwork to a guy’s studio in Baltimore for him to photograph. It was during this interaction that I learned how important it is to have the right camera for capturing a high enough image dpi, especially since the he said the final work would be around 6ft tall!

After all the prep to get photos taken of the art were completed, it was then a waiting game on when they would put the art up. I never got word from the BWI airport themselves, but rather from a High school classmate who texted (or messaged me on Twitter I don’t remember) that she saw my art hanging in the D/E connector. I verified that was indeed my art, and was so excited that someone noticed it!
Yumi Hogan and the press would be hosting a reception for every wave of artworks hung at BWI (Many other artists were also accepted) around August. This reception was extra exciting because I would be meeting Yumi Hogan a 2nd time, after attending her annual student art show the year prior.
Hogan spoke about her history in the arts and why supporting the arts is so important to her. I recall her mentioning that she use to teach at MICA, where I had attended for pre-college one summer. Nearly 8 years later and im STILL geeking out over this.
