Post likes are not a natural way of processing information
we should go back to wondering and leaving more to imagination
I, like many, have been stressed out and struggling with getting engagement back. The likes of what we saw 2018-2022.
The thing is, having people physically click the little "heart" is not a natural response for most unless it truly speaks to them. How did we fare on social media before 2017?
When I was growing up on YouTube and Deviantart I do not recall seeing art from people the community admired having a bunch of visible likes. Yet, hundreds knew their name! Likes averaged 20-500 per post (with YouTube having hundreds more views than likes of a post got popular).
I myself was not physically clicking the like button and I am generous with clicking that button. It took me until 2023 after hearing people talk about their experience online, that everyone uses social media for different reasons. Most do not understand how desperate you need these likes for your online brand.
People gave said that they rarely comment, but spend time lurking instead. There's those who only use it to keep up with their community and don't branch out until you're connected to them in real life somehow. Once you're no longer within their circle or community, you get unfollowed. It's what we would do in real life...so why do we stress so much about likes and reposts?
I am reminded this year that your work can definitley be liked by many, possibly, but you’ll never know about it until you do.
Let's relish in the mystery of whether someone online has seen us or not instead.
